Lançada versão alpha do Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope”

"On a western hillside, a pack of hungry coyotes flushed their prey
from a thicket of scrub mesquite. With gleeful yips, they began
pursuing what first appeared to be a large jack rabbit. But what was
this thing? In between its long ears, the animal was sporting a set of
small antlers similar to those of an antelope. Darting first to the
left, and then to the right, it reached the bottom of the hill where
it put on a burst of speed and quickly outran the trailing coyotes.
Once at a safe distance, the creature stopped, turned around and
emitted several coyote-like yips in a rude mockery of its hapless
pursuers. The sounds seemed to linger tauntingly upon the air as the
discouraged pack abandoned the chase. From this small episode, the
artful and elusive jackalope emerged from the shadows of an Old West
  legend."

"Fast as fast can be, you'll never catch me!"

   -- Dave Coulier

Welcome to Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 1, which will in time become Ubuntu
9.04.

Pre-releases of Jaunty are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Jaunty development cycle. The Alpha images are
known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs,
while representing a very recent snapshot of Jaunty. You can download it
here:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/jaunty/alpha-1/ (Kubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/jaunty/alpha-1/ (Xubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/jaunty/alpha-1/
    (Ubuntu Studio)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

The primary changes from Intrepid have been the re-merging of changes
from Debian. We've also been spending some time getting the new ARM port
up and running (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/arm-linux), although its
build daemons are still catching up so installable images will have to
wait for a future Alpha release.

This is the very first roughly working set of images off the production
line, and they haven't all been tested, so you should expect some bugs.
Prominent among these are that some of the images are oversized and can
only be tested using a DVD or a virtual machine, and that the desktop CD
isn't ready yet! This release consists only of the alternate and server
CDs; the desktop CD will follow in the next Alpha release.

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Jaunty, have a look at the jaunty-changes mailing list:

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/jaunty-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if
you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic
list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved
specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting
events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu

Enjoy,

Distribuição Backtrack será baseada no Ubuntu

Do blog de Emanuele Gentili:

I talked with Mati Aharoni about new release now in developement, and him say to me that has taken the decision to abandon slackware for choose Ubuntu in next BackTrack version (4).

For those who doesn’t know Backtrack, It is a Linux distribution distributed as a Live CD which resulted from the merger of WHAX and the Auditor Security Collection. It takes advantage of SLAX’s modular design and structure to enable the user to include customizable scripts, additional tools and configurable kernels in personalized distributions. The BackTrack project was created by Mati Aharoni and Max Moser (with updates provided by jayme) and is a collaborative effort involving the community.

BackTrack is the most Top rated linux live distribution focused on penetration testing. With no installation whatsoever, the analysis platform is started directly from the CD-Rom and is fully accessible within minutes.

It’s evolved from the merge of the two wide spread distributions – Whax and Auditor Security Collection. By joining forces and replacing these distributions, BackTrack has gained massive popularity and was voted in 2006 as the #1 Security Live Distribution by insecure.org. Security professionals as well as new comers are using BackTrack as their favorite toolset all over the globe.

BackTrack has a long history and was based on many different linux distributions until it is now based on a Slackware linux distribution and the corresponding live-CD scripts by Tomas M. (www.slax.org) . Every package, kernel configuration and script is optimized to be used by security penetration testers. Patches and automation have been added, applied or developed to provide a neat and ready-to-go environment.

After coming into a stable development procedure during the last releases and consolidating feedbacks and addition, the team was focused to support more and newer hardware as well as provide more flexibility and modularity by restructuring the build and maintenance processes. With the current version, most applications are built as individual modules which help to speed up the maintenance releases and fixes.

Because Metasploit is one of the key tools for most analysts it is tightly integrated into BackTrack and both projects collaborate together to always provide an on-the-edge implementation of Metasploit within the BackTrack CD-Rom images or the upcoming remote-exploit.org distributed and maintained virtualization images (like VMWare images appliances).

Being superior while staying easy to use is key to a good security live cd. We took things a step further and aligned BackTrack to penetration testing methodologies and assessment frameworks (ISSAF and OSSTMM). This will help our professional users during their daily reporting nightmares.

Currently BackTrack consists of more than 300 different up-to-date tools which are logically structured according to the work flow of security professionals. This structure allows even newcomers to find the related tools to a certain task to be accomplished. New technologies and testing techniques are merged into BackTrack as soon as possible to keep it up-to-date.

No other commercial or freely available analysis platform offers an equivalent level of usability with automatic configuration and focus on penetration testing.

Welcome in Ubuntu BackTrack
